The average college student will take around 30 to 35 classes over four years. While this may sound like a lot, the figure actually pales in comparison to the hundreds (sometimes even thousands) of courses offered by every school each semester. These encompass everything from organic chemistry and English to Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse and Tree Climbing. With this plethora of options, how exactly does one go about choosing which courses to take?

Well, the easiest way to narrow down your choices is to choose a major, which typically consists of 10 to 15 preset courses you must complete to…

For those who seek to study in the United States, academic competitions are essential if you want to get into a great university. Out of all the competitions, math competitions cover the widest range, forms and kinds, allowing students with varying levels of academic prowess to participate.

For 9th graders, some prestigious international schools would implicitly put The American Mathematics Competitions (AMC) results as one of their admission requirements. For 10th graders, 2021 will be the last year for them to be able to take part in AMC10. …

I vividly remember how fatigue clung to my body, heavy and cloying, in my sophomore and junior years of college.

I was sluggish, waking up and feeling as though I’d only deepened my debt to sleep, as opposed to paying it off — mostly because I wasn’t. I was lucky to be in bed before one in the morning, only to wake with the sun in advance of an early class at another college in the consortium, a mile away and uphill.

In my classes, which were almost entirely upper-division seminars that relied on keen literary analyses and acute understandings…

Good news: The long-awaited summer break is right around the corner.

If you follow our blog, you know that attending a summer school is a good way to spend this golden time. In an earlier post, we laid out why summer schools matter and how you could make the most of them. Today, we’re going to walk through how to choose the right one for you, focusing on for-credit academic summer programs hosted by universities.

When it comes to evaluating the quality of an academic summer program, it’s important to keep these criteria in mind:

  • Application difficulty
  • Faculty background
  • Course…

Who was the first artist to create abstract art?

Looking at this question, whose name popped up in your mind first? Kandinsky? Mondrian? Or Malevich?

These artists indeed made significant contributions to their respective fields. However, in abstract art, one person explored infinite possibilities ahead of all of them. Her name was Hilma af Klint.

Who is Hilma af Klint

Born into an ordinary middle class Swedish family in 1862, Hilma was the fourth daughter of a Swedish Navy soldier. From a young age, she showed great talent in art. …

Prior to joining Thinktown as an Educational Consultant, I worked for a few years in creative development in the Film & Television industry. To land jobs in such a notoriously competitive field, I worked tirelessly to cultivate a handful of skills that helped separate me from the ever-growing crowd of budding creatives. For students interested in the entertainment industry, I highly recommend dedicating your time and energy to three specific activities if you wish to do the same:

Study Storytelling

Story is king in entertainment. It always has been and it always will be. Anyone aspiring to a career in film and/or…

What do we think of when we think about theatre? Is it a school play that you participated in as a child, a Broadway musical, or a Shakespearean performance in the park?

Theatre, as a comprehensive stage art, is presented in various forms and styles. The audience, purpose, style and space design of each play are different. So here comes the question: How do we define “theater”?

A very accomplished Chinese actor and director once said:

“Theatre is a crack in the high wall. Although it looks inconspicuous, you can see light through it. We hope that drama can reflect…

For three summers during my undergraduate career, I worked as a proctor at Harvard Summer School. Although the term “proctor” is often used to refer to a person who monitors an exam, at Harvard Summer School, a proctor is essentially an RA (resident assistant). This meant that I lived in a dorm with around 30 students and enforced program rules, ensured the safety and health of my students, held events for them, and served as their mentor and confidant.

As a result of this job, I was able to observe a wide variety of students’ journeys and to discern what…

What is HiMCM

The High School Mathematical Contest in Modeling (HiMCM) is a prestigious competition that has been known to strengthen college applications. Its high value and international prestige means that winning an award in this contest could highly boost your chance of getting into a top university in the US.

In HiMCM, students are asked to use mathematical modelling and programming to solve real-life problems presented by the contest and produce an essay. This contest is a great challenge for student’s flexible application of math knowledge, but it is also highly rewarding.

From the recent three-year early admissions results, it’s not hard…

Have you ever felt this way as an IB economics student —

You remember every economics theory, but always fail to use them to answer exam questions?

After seeing the solutions, you came to the realization that you actually DO understand the concepts or models and how to use them, but just can’t recall during the actual test?

This phenomenon suggests that you don’t actually have a good command of the knowledge. You might know the concepts, but you are not clear what exactly each section in the textbooks is about. Is it a definition? A feature? Or a comment…
